AGK-ja e mirëpret vendimin e Gjykatës Themelore lidhur me zgjedhjen e kryetarit të KPM-së
The Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AJK) welcomes the decision of the Basic Court, which approved the lawsuit filed by the Kosovo Law Institute (KLI) concerning the election of the Chair of the Independent Media Commission (IMC) earlier this year.
The Basic Court declared unlawful the decision of the IMC Board to appoint Besnik Berisha as Chair, a decision taken during the Board meeting held on 17 January 2025.
In its lawsuit, KLI also requested the annulment of paragraph 2 of Article 3 of the Rules of Procedure of the Independent Media Commission. This paragraph had been added to the Rules during the same KPM meeting held on 17 January.
AJK considers that Mr. Berisha’s appointment was carried out unlawfully, representing an open attempt by the Government of Kosovo to exert political control over this independent institution.
The Basic Court’s decision issued today restores legality and serves as an important reminder that independent institutions must fully respect applicable laws in key decision-making processes.
AJK remains committed to safeguarding the political independence of the Independent Media Commission, so that it can properly fulfill its constitutional mandate to monitor and regulate television and radio broadcasters in Kosovo.
