The second day of Kosovo journalists' visit in Belfast continued with speakers from politics, media, and civil society, bringing new and unique perspectives on peace journalism.

We began the day with a session by Matthew O’Toole, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Northern Ireland, on press freedom and media sustainability. He discussed his role as the leader of the opposition and as a former journalist and press official at Downing Street.

Following this, we had an inspirational panel discussion on “Women in Media,” featuring Amanda Ferguson – freelance from Reuters, Niamh Campbell - Belfast Telegraph, and Allison Morris - Belfast Telegraph. The panelists shared their experiences and contributions to the media industry, addressing both the progress made and the ongoing challenges women face in this field.

In the afternoon, Angelina Fusco, chair of Dart Center Europe delivered a presentation on the Principles of Responsible Journalism. She emphasized the ethical responsibilities of journalists, especially when reporting on traumatic experiences, and provided practical tips for covering such sensitive topics.

The day continued with a session led by Prof. Steven Youngblood on Human Rights Reporting. He offered guidance on how journalists can cover human rights issues, stressing the importance of accuracy, empathy, and integrity in such reporting.

We concluded the day with a screening and discussion of the film Lyra, about the life and death of journalist Lyra McKee, murdered in 2019 in Londonderry.

The Peace Journalism Project is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office through the British Embassy Pristina.
